Recently had a project of creating an art book. I wanted to do something a bit different so created a chicken sculpture of iron wire and plaster on a fired iron based. The loosely coiled head and neck allow it to wobble when moved and the wire forming the comb/crest covered in red iron powder. To the body I’ve fixed the pages, that can be turned, invoking the feathers. A variety of techniques are used including sketching, linoprint, papercutting, negatives, embossing. Each page tells a moment from the chicken’s life, with a humorous take – what she likes to eat, photos of her life (selfie, lunch with the girls, her pinup…), what she’s survived, eggs she’s laid, and finally there is a recipe for poule au pot, which is how a chicken may well end up. Below is a video of the work.
