I was recently asked what was inspiration or thoughts behind creating “A Long Time Ago In The Marc Bolan Fan Club”. I responded directly but then thought this may be of interest to others, so here is how it was created:
I wanted to do a painting, to make a change from the charcoal, and to do a face. I started with a reference photo (from Unsplashed). I often do this, using the photo as a starting point, where I am not aiming to reproduce the photo, just to use it for some placement of facial features. I started with blocking in the areas with paint straight away, no prior drawing. I then developed it intuitively as the painting revealed itself.
I was listening to the radio whilst I was working – music channel this time – and a Marc Bolan song was played. Can’t remember which one at the time, but the way I’d painted the hair reminded me of him. The idea came to me that this could be a woman who was a fan. I then played Marc Bolan/T Rex on my own music feed over and over to complete the painting and feel of it. The main song I repeated was Life’s a Gas. The colours were ones that evoked the era for me and the hazy style also creating a feeling of a moment a long time ago.
